BACKGROUND: Colonoscopy is a classic diagnostic method with possible complications including abdominal pain and diarrhoea. In this study, gut microbiota dynamics and related metabolic products during and after colonoscopy were explored to accelerate gut microbiome balance through probiotics. METHODS: The gut microbiota and fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) were analyzed in four healthy subjects before and after colonoscopy, along with seven individuals supplemented with Clostridium butyricum. We employed 16S rRNA sequencing and GC-MS to investigate these changes. We also conducted bioinformatic analysis to explore the buk gene, encoding butyrate kinase, across C. butyricum strains from the human gut. RESULTS: The gut microbiota and fecal short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) of four healthy subjects were recovered on the 7th day after colonoscopy. We found that Clostridium and other bacteria might have efficient butyric acid production through bioinformatic analysis of the buk and assessment of the transcriptional level of the buk. Supplementation of seven healthy subjects with Clostridium butyricum after colonoscopy resulted in a quicker recovery and stabilization of gut microbiota and fecal SCFAs on the third day. CONCLUSION: We suggest that supplementation of Clostridium butyricum after colonoscopy should be considered in future routine clinical practice.

Betaine, a methyl donor, plays a crucial role in lipid metabolism. Previous studies have shown that appropriate betaine supplementation in a high-fat diet reduces triglycerides (TG) of serum and hepatopancreas in fish. However, the underlying mechanism remains unclear. This study examined whether betaine can enhance the secretion of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) and sought to identify the specific mechanisms through which this enhancement occurs. A lipid accumulation model was established in gibel carp and L8824 cells using a high-fat diet and oleic acid, respectively. Different doses of betaine (1, 4, and 16 g/kg in the diet; 400 µmol in cell culture) were administered, and measurements were taken for lipid deposition, gene expression of HNF4α, MTTP, and ApoB, as well as the regulation of Mttp and Apob promoters by HNF4α. The results showed that betaine supplementation mitigated lipid droplet accumulation, TG levels, and VLDL production induced by the high-fat diet in gibel carp hepatopancreas and L8824 cells. Moreover, betaine not only increased VLDL content in the cell culture supernatant but also reversed the inhibitory effects of the high-fat diet on protein expression of MTTP, ApoB, and HNF4α in both gibel carp hepatopancreas and L8824 cells. Additionally, HNF4α exhibits transactivating activity on the promoter of Mttp in gibel carp. These findings suggest that betaine supplementation exerts its effects through the HNF4α/MTTP/ApoB pathway, promoting the assembly and secretion of VLDL and effectively reducing lipid accumulation in the hepatopancreas of farmed gibel carp fed a high-fat diet.

The widespread prevalence of Helicobacter pylori infection, particularly in China, contributes to the development of gastrointestinal diseases. Antibiotics have limitations, including adverse reactions and increased antibiotic resistance. Therefore, identification of novel gastrogenic probiotics capable of surviving the acidic gastric environment and effectively combating H. pylori infection has potential in restoring gastric microbiota homeostasis. Five novel strains of human gastrogenic Weizmannia coagulans (BCF-01-05) were isolated from healthy gastric mucosa and characterized using 16S rDNA identification. Acid resistance, H. pylori inhibition, and adherence to gastric epithelial cells were evaluated in in-vitro experiments and the molecular mechanism explored in in-vivo experiments. Among the gastric-derived W. coagulans strains, BCF-01 exhibited the strongest adhesion and H. pylori inhibition, warranting further in-vivo safety evaluation. Through 16S rRNA sequencing of a mouse model, BCF-01 was determined to significantly restore H. pylori-associated gastric dysbiosis and increase the abundance of potential probiotic bacteria. Furthermore, BCF-01 enhanced mucosal tight junction protein expression and inhibited the TLR4-NFκB-pyroptosis signaling pathway in macrophages, as demonstrated by qRT-PCR and western blotting.These findings highlight the potential of BCF-01 in the prevention and control of H. pylori infection. Specifically, treatment with BCF-01 effectively restored gastric microecology and improved H. pylori-mediated mucosal barrier destruction while reducing inflammation through inhibition of the TLR4-NFκB-pyroptosis signaling pathway in macrophages. BCF-01 is a promising alternative to traditional triple therapy for H. pylori infections, offering minimal side effects with high suitability for high-risk individuals.

PtII based organometallic photosensitizers (PSs) have emerged as novel potent photodynamic inactivation (PDI) reagents through their enhanced intersystem crossing (ISC) processes. Currently, few PtII PSs have been investigated as antibacterial materials, with relatively poor performances reported and with structure-activity relationships not well described. Herein, a pair of configurational isomers are reported of Bis-BODIPY (4,4-difluoro-boradizaindacene) embedded PtII PSs. The cis-isomer (cis-BBP) displayed enhanced 1O2 generation and better bacterial membrane anchoring capability as compared to the trans-isomer (trans-BBP). The effective PDI concentrations (efficiency > 99.9%) for cis-BBP in Acinetobacter baumannii (multi-drug resistant (MDR)) and Staphylococcus aureus are 400 nM (12 J cm-2) and 100 nM (18 J cm-2), respectively; corresponding concentrations and light doses for trans-BBP in the two bacteria are 2.50 µM (30 J cm-2) and 1.50 µM (18 J cm-2), respectively. The 50% and 90% minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC50 and MIC90) ratio of trans-BBP to cis-BBP is 22.22 and 24.02 in A. baumannii (MDR); 21.29 and 22.36 in methicillin resistant S. aureus (MRSA), respectively. Furthermore, cis-BBP displays superior in vivo antibacterial performance, with acceptable dark and photoinduced cytotoxicity. These results demonstrate cis-BBP is a robust light-assisted antibacterial reagent at sub-micromolecular concentrations. More importantly, configuration of PtII PSs should be an important issue to be considered in further PDI reagents design.

The proliferation of harmful algal blooms is a global concern due to the risk they pose to the environment and human health. Algal toxins which are hazardous compounds produced by dangerous algae, can potentially kill humans. Researchers have been drawn to photocatalysis because of its clean and energy-saving properties. Graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) photocatalysts have been extensively studied for their ability to eliminate algae. These photocatalysts have attracted notice because of their cost-effectiveness, appropriate electronic structure, and exceptional chemical stability. This paper reviews the progress of photocatalytic inactivation of harmful algae by g-C3N4-based materials in recent years. A brief overview is given of a number of the modification techniques on g-C3N4-based photocatalytic materials, as well as the process of inactivating algal cells and destroying their toxins. Additionally, it provides a theoretical framework for future research on the eradication of algae using g-C3N4-based photocatalytic materials.

The eradication of Helicobacter pylori is an urgent global issue. However, the traditional regimens have several limitations. Thus, we propose the idea of treating bacterial gastric disease with the objective of eliminating gastric pathogenic bacteria and enhancing gastroprotective effects using gastric probiotics. In this study, a total of 12 Lactobacillus strains were isolated from the gastric mucosa of healthy donors. After evaluation using a weight scoring system, Lactobacillus paragasseri strain LPG-9 was identified as the most promising probiotic for gastric disease, with the highest acid-resistance and the best adhesion characteristics. Gastric colonisation, H. pylori inhibition, anti-inflammatory, and gastric homeostasis effects of LPG-9 were confirmed in C57BL/6 mice. Finally, a safety evaluation and whole-genome sequencing were performed. Based on the results of this study, LPG-9 originates from the gastric microbiota and is a promising probiotic for gastric disease, particularly H. pylori-induced gastritis, providing a solution to this global issue.

(1) Background: Aging is a global phenomenon, and China's aging is extensive and rapid and already at the middle to upper level worldwide. Promoting social interaction and increasing positive psychological qualities in individuals are key components in helping people adapt to the physical and mental changes of the aging process. Among them, how middle-aged and older adults improve their physical and mental health through physical activity is of great concern. (2) Methods: This study measured the physical activity of 2721 middle-aged and elderly square dance participants across China, and structural equation modeling was applied to explore the relationship between square dance exercise and group cohesion as well as the role of perceived social support and psychological capital. (3) Results: The results showed that (a) square dance exercise positively predicts group cohesion among middle-aged and older adults. (b) Perceived social support and psychological capital mediate the relationship between square dance exercise and group cohesion, and the mediating role consists of three pathways: perceived social support alone, psychological capital alone, and perceived social support-psychological capital chain mediation. (c) The mediating effect of psychological capital alone is greater than the mediating effect of perceived social support alone and the mediating effect of the perceived social support-psychological capital chain. (4) Conclusions: This study provides support for the theory and practice of square dance exercise and intervention guidance for increasing positive psychological qualities and group dynamic levels in middle-aged and older adults.

CD80 is an important co-stimulatory molecule that participates in the immune response. Soluble CD80 can induce T cell activation and overcome PDL1-mediated immune suppression. In this study, we aimed to construct recombinant Lactococcus lactis for oral delivery of the soluble CD80 (hsCD80) protein or the fusion protein containing the cholera toxin B subunit (CTB) and hsCD80 (CTB-hsCD80) under the control of the nisin-inducible expression system. The recombinant L. lactis expressed and secreted hsCD80 or CTB-hsCD80 fusion proteins after induction by nisin in vitro and in the enteric cavity. Additionally, the CTB-hsCD80 fusion protein showed uptake by intestinal epithelial cells, was cleaved by the furin protease, and was released as free hsCD80 protein into the blood circulation. Orally administered hsCD80 and CTB-hsCD80 containing L. lactis increased the proportion of activated T cells in the spleen and intestinal epithelium, inhibited tumor growth, and prolonged the survival of tumor-bearing mice. The hsCD80-containing L. lactis showed greater therapeutic effects on primary colonic adenoma in APCmin/- mice and completely suppressed tumor growth. Further, recombinant CTB-hsCD80 in L. lactis was more efficient than hsCD80-containing bacteria in inhibiting the growth of xenografted colon cancer and melanoma cells. hsCD80 engineered probiotics may serve as a promising new approach for antitumor immunotherapy, especially for colorectal cancer.

Background: The relationships among intestinal dysbiosis, bile acid (BA) metabolism disorders, and ulcerative colitis pathogenesis are now recognized. However, how specific strains regulate BA metabolism to alleviate colitis is still unclear. This study investigated the effects of Bacteroides dorei on the development of acute colitis and elucidated the underlying mechanisms. Methods: The safety of BDX-01 was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. 2.5% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS) induced colitis in C57BL/6 mice, Caco-2, and J774A.1 cells were used to evaluate the anti-inflammatory effect of BDX-01. qPCR and Western blotting were used to detect the expression of inflammatory pathways. Microbiota composition was analyzed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing. Enzyme activity analysis and targeted metabolomics were used to analyze fecal bile salt hydrolase (BSH) and BA levels. Antibiotic-induced pseudo-germ-free mice were used to investigate the role of gut microbiota in the alleviation of colitis by BDX-01. Results: We confirmed the safety of novel strain Bacteroides dorei BDX-01 in vitro and in vivo. Oral BDX-01 administration significantly ameliorated the symptoms and pathological damage of DSS-induced acute colitis. Moreoever, 16S rRNA sequencing and enzyme activity analysis showed that BDX-01 treatment increased intestinal BSH activity and the abundance of bacteria harboring this enzyme. Targeted metabolomics revealed that BDX-01 significantly increased intestinal BA excretion and deconjugation. Certain BAs act as FXR agonists. The ß-muricholic acid (ßMCA): taurine ß-muricholic acid (T-ßMCA) and cholic acid (CA): taurocholic acid (TCA) ratios and the deoxycholic acid (DCA) level decreased markedly in the colitis models but increased substantially in BDX-01-treated mice. The colonic farnesoid X receptor (FXR) and fibroblast growth factor 15 (FGF15) were upregulated in mice treated with BDX-01. BDX-01 downregulated the expression of colonic proinflammatory cytokines pyrin domain-containing 3 (NLRP3), ASC, cleaved caspase-1, and IL-1ß. Antibiotic treatment didn't abolish the protective effect of BDX-01 on colitis. In vitro studies showed TßMCA abolished the effects of BDX-01 on FXR activation and inhibition of the NLRP3 inflammasome activation. Conclusion: BDX-01 improved DSS-induced acute colitis by regulating intestinal BSH activity and the FXR-NLRP3 signaling pathway. Our findings indicate that BDX-01 is a promising probiotic to improve the management of ulcerative colitis.

CONTEXT: Imbalance of the skin microbial community could impair skin immune homeostasis and thus trigger skin lesions. Dysbiosis of skin microbiome may be involved in the early pathogenesis of diabetic foot (DF). However, the potential mechanism remains unclear. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the dynamic composition and function of the foot skin microbiome with risk stratification for DF and assess whether dysbiosis of the skin microbiome induces diabetic skin lesions. METHODS: We enrolled 90 consecutive subjects who were divided into 5 groups based on DF risk stratification: very low, low, moderate, and high risk for ulcers and a healthy control group. Integrated analysis of 16S ribosomal RNA and metagenomic sequencing of cotton swab samples was applied to identify the foot skin microbiome composition and functions in subjects. Then a mouse model of microbiota transplantation was used to evaluate the effects of the skin microbiome on diabetic skin lesions. RESULTS: The results demonstrated that, with the progression of diabetic complications, the proportion of gram-negative bacteria in plantar skin increased. At the species level, metagenome sequencing analyses showed Moraxella osloensis to be a representative core strain in the high-risk group. The major microbial metabolites affecting diabetic skin lesions were increased amino acid metabolites, and antibiotic resistance genes in microorganisms were abundant. Skin microbiota from high-risk patients induced more inflammatory cell infiltration, similar to the lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated response, which was inhibited by Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) antagonists. CONCLUSIONS: The skin microbiome in patients with diabetes undergoes dynamic changes at taxonomic and functional levels with the progression of diabetic complications. The increase in gram-negative bacteria on the skin surface through LPS-TLR4 signal transduction could induce inflammatory response in early diabetic skin lesions.

Sepsis, a critical condition resulting from the systemic inflammatory response to a severe microbial infection, represents a global public health challenge. However, effective treatment or intervention to prevent and combat sepsis is still lacking. Here, we report that hyodeoxycholic acid (HDCA) has excellent anti-inflammatory properties in sepsis. We discovered that the plasma concentration of HDCA was remarkably lower in patients with sepsis and negatively correlated with the severity of the disease. Similar changes in HDCA levels in plasma and cecal content samples were observed in a mouse model of sepsis, and these changes were associated with a reduced abundance of HDCA-producing strains. Interestingly, HDCA administration significantly decreased systemic inflammatory responses, prevented organ injury, and prolonged the survival of septic mice. We demonstrated that HDCA suppressed excessive activation of inflammatory macrophages by competitively blocking lipopolysaccharide binding to the Toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and myeloid differentiation factor 2 receptor complex, a unique mechanism that characterizes HDCA as an endogenous inhibitor of inflammatory signaling. Additionally, we verified these findings in TLR4 knockout mice. Our study highlights the potential value of HDCA as a therapeutic molecule for sepsis.

Lead (Pb2+) exposure cause a potential hazard to human health and the ecological environment; however, prevention and treatment of Pb2+ toxicity remain problems. The aim of this study is to isolate a novel probiotic lead (Pb2+)-resistant Lactobacillus strain from the infant gut microbiota and to determine whether they have the probiotic properties and investigate its preventive and therapeutic effects in the early-life Pb2+ exposure mouse model. In the present study, a total of 64 Pb2+-resistant colonies were isolated from the infant gut microbiota. Of these colonies, SYF-08, identified as Lacticaseibacillus casei, exhibited a Pb2+-binding capacity and Pb2+ tolerance. The in vivo study showed that SYF-08 treatment could effectively reduce Pb2+ levels in the blood, alleviate Pb2+ enrichment in bone and brain tissues, and recover the intestinal and brain damage in both dams and offspring. SYF-08 treatment also improved the antioxidant index in the liver and kidney tissues, while increasing the diversity of the intestinal microbiota of the offspring. The results of the in vitro and in vivo studies suggest that SYF-08, isolated from infant fecal samples, is a promising candidate probiotic against Pb2+ toxicity.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have become the cornerstone in treating many solid and hematological cancers. The ICIs, including anti-cytotoxic T lymphocyte-associated protein 4 (CTLA-4), anti-programed cell death 1 (PD-1), and anti-programed death-ligand 1 (PD-L1) monoclonal antibodies, have significantly improved the prognosis of cancer patients. Meanwhile, the incidence of hepatic or renal impairment in cancer patients is increasing. However, data about the efficacy and safety of ICIs in patients with hepatic or renal impairment are limited. In this review, we characterize and summarize the pharmacokinetics (PK) of ICIs as well as the effects of hepatic or renal function on the PK of ICIs, and provide specific recommendations for clinicians when prescribing ICIs in patients with hepatic or renal impairment.

OBJECTIVE: Frequent nightmare behavior or deep nightmare experiences may harm the physical and mental health and performance of athletes. This study explores the nightmare experiences of athletes, and includes non-athletes with similar experiences for comparison. METHODS: The Nightmare Experience Questionnaire (NEQ); Zuckerman-Kuhlman-Aluja Personality Questionnaire, Shortened Form (ZKA-PQ/SF); and Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) were used. The subjects were 187 athletes (mean age = 20.44 years, SD = 0.85; 91 females, 96 males) and 90 non-athletes (mean age = 20.34 years, SD = 1.65; 52 females, 38 males) who reported having nightmares. RESULTS: A total of 87 athletes (46.5%) reported having nightmare experiences. The athlete nightmare group scored significantly higher in neuroticism than the non-nightmare group, and their anxiety scores were significantly higher than those of non-athletes, who scored higher in aggressiveness, neuroticism, and sensation seeking. Moreover, anxiety, neuroticism, and sensation seeking positively predicted athletes' nightmare experiences. CONCLUSIONS: Personality traits and anxiety levels can be effectively applied to predict athletes' nightmare experiences.

(1) Background: This study aimed to explore the relationship between years of participation, subjective exercise experience, and group cohesion among gender-specific square dance practitioners. (2) Methods: The Subjective Exercise Experience Questionnaire (SEEQ) and Group Environment Questionnaire (GEQ) were used to evaluate Subjective Exercise Experience (SEE) and group cohesion (GC). An analysis was conducted on 130 Chinese (63 males and 67 females) using multiple group analysis within a structural equation model. (3) Results: (a) The positive aspects of Subjective Exercise Experience (SEE) and Positive Well-Being (PWB), had a strongly positive effect on GC in both groups. The negative aspects of SEE, Psychological Fatigue (PF), and Psychological Distress (PD), had negative effects on GC. (b) Only for the male group was there an indirect effect of participation years on the association between SEE and GC in the model (a × b = 0.062, 95% CI [0.001, 0.181]; standard error (SE) = 0.062, p = 0.048). (c) The significant differences between paths coefficients were noticed in the association of years of participation with SEE (t = -2.043) and GC (t = -1.962). (4) Conclusion: Based on these results, gender differences in terms of the partial mediating role of adherence in the relationship of SEE and GC were presented for future research, fitness popularization, and society.

Breast cancer-related lymphedema is a treatment-related chronic disease that causes great distress and medical burden. Early screening and precautionary measures for lymphedema could improve well-being and decrease medical costs. Herein, we used bioelectrical impedance analysis for early screening of lymphedema. We set up a verifiable standardized subclinical standard to screen subclinical lymphedema in postoperative breast cancer patients using bioelectrical impedance. The first part determined the criteria of subclinical lymphedema. Among the 424 female participants, 127 were healthy women, whereas 297 were postoperative breast cancer survivors. Subclinical standard boundaries were determined by the 95% confidence interval of the healthy women. The screening rate of patients with subclinical lymphedema was inferred by comparing the subclinical standard boundaries and the postoperative patient values. A total of 14.81-20.87% of postoperative breast cancer survivors were identified as patients with subclinical lymphedema. The second part provided the results of the verification test of this subclinical standard. The data of the verification test from 30 healthy women and 30 screened patients met the subclinical standard, and 30 breast cancer survivors with lymphedema verified the utility and feasibility of the subclinical standard. Therefore, this standard could provide a screening tool for early the identification of subclinical breast cancer survivors. Early detection helps implement personal and precise medical precautions for patients with subclinical lymphedema.

Pb poisoning affects infant growth and development. However, dimercaptosuccinic acid (DMSA) as the current therapy for Pb poisoning exerts relatively significant toxic side effects in infants. Therefore, identifying a non-toxic treatment in this regard is particularly important. In this study, we aimed to investigate the therapeutic effect of an infant feces-derived probiotic strain, Lactobacillus casei SYF-08 (SYF-08), on Pb poisoning in young mice. The Pb levels in the organisms were detected via inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, while the therapeutic effect of SYF-08 on Pb-induced neural system damage was explored via the Morris water maze test, hematoxylin-eosin staining, and immunohistochemistry. Additionally, the molecular mechanisms underlying the protective effects of SYF-08 against Pb-induced intestinal damage were also explored via histological staining, 16S rRNA sequencing, untargeted metabolomics, qRT-PCR, and western blotting. In vivo experiments revealed that SYF-08 reduced blood and bone Pb levels and increased urinary Pb excretion. Additionally, SYF-08 alleviated Pb-induced pathological damage to the brain and ultimately improved the learning and cognitive abilities of the young mice. This treatment also restored intestinal microflora dysbiosis, regulated bile acid metabolism, and inhibited the FXR-NLRP3 signaling pathway. It also resulted in fewer adverse events than the DMSA treatment. In conclusion, our results provided valuable insights into the therapeutic role of SYF-08 in Pb poisoning and also suggested that its administration can significantly alleviate the Pb-induced damage.

Chronic lead exposure can result in cognitive dysfunction and behavioral disorders. However, the current treatments for alleviating lead poisoning have many side effects. Previous studies have suggested that probiotics may have the potential to ameliorate neurotoxicity caused by lead exposure. This study determines the alleviating effects of Lactobacillus plantarum WSJ-06 on neurological disorders induced by chronic lead exposure from the perspective of the gut microbiota and serum metabolites. The results showed that treatment with Lactobacillus plantarum WSJ-06 alleviated memory dysfunction and reduced the levels of inflammatory cytokines in the serum and hippocampus induced by lead exposure. In addition, Lactobacillus plantarum WSJ-06 partially restored the lead-induced gut microbiota dysbiosis. It also increased the proportion of some beneficial metabolites in the serum, such as arachidonic acid, tryptophan hydroxylase, serotonin, vitamin B12, trehalose, and kynurenic acid, and decreased some metabolites in the serum, such as LPS 20:5 and L-kynurenine. A correlation analysis further indicated that lead-induced neurobehavioral disorders were related to intestinal microbiota (the [Eubacterium]_siraeum_group, Roseburia, Lactobacillus, etc) and serum metabolites (LPS 20:5, serotonin, vitamin B12, etc). In conclusion, Lactobacillus plantarum WSJ-06 alleviated neuroinflammation and memory impairment caused by lead exposure by modulating the gut microbiota and metabolites in the serum.

Background: Postmenopausal osteoporosis (PMOP) is a common disease in older women that can severely jeopardize their health. Previous studies have demonstrated the effect of Er xian decoction (EXD) or Baduanjin exercise (BE) on PMOP. However, reports on the effect of EXD combined with BE on PMOP are limited. This study aimed to investigate the impact of EXD combined with BE on bone mineral density (BMD), lower limb balance, and mental health in women with PMOP. Methods: A 1 : 1 : 1 simple randomization technique was employed. Fifty participants with postmenopausal osteoporosis were allocated to three groups: the EXD group (EXD = 15); the BE group (BE = 18); and the combined group (EXD + BE = 17). After both 8 weeks and 16 weeks of intervention treatment, participants improved significantly with respect to BMD and the one-leg standing test (OLST), Berg balance scale (BBS), timed up and go (TUG) test, self-anxiety scale (SAS), and self-rating depression scale (SDS). The results were used to compare the effect of the intervention on BMD, lower limb balance function, and mental health in patients with PMOP. Results: Compared to the EXD and BE groups, the EXD + BE group showed the strongest effects on BMD, lower limb balance function, and mental health (p < 0.01). A correlation between BMD and lower limb balance and mental health was noted in the EXD + BE group. The change in mental health (SAS score) was correlated with BMD (femoral neck) improvement. Conclusions: The present study demonstrates that EXD combined with BE (EXD + BE) may have a therapeutic advantage over both monotherapies for treating BMD, lower limb balance function, and mental health in patients with PMOP. The feasibility of the approach for a large-scale RCT was also confirmed. Er xian decoction combined with Baduanjin exercise (EXD + BE) might offer a viable treatment alternative for participants with postmenopausal osteoporosis given its promising effects in disease control and treatment, with good efficacy and safety profiles.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to examine the effect of Baduanjin exercise on COVID-19-related anxiety, psychological well-being, and the lower back pain of college students during the coronavirus pandemic in China. SETTING: The study was carried out in a temporary experimental center of four universities in Wenzhou city in Zhejiang Province, China. POPULATION: 387 participants who were college students were allocated to two groups: the Baduanjin exercise group(BEG, n = 195); and the Control group(CG,n = 192). METHODS: In this randomized controlled trial,387 participants who were college students were randomly allocated in a 1:1 ratio to 12-week Baduanjin exercise group (BEG, n = 195)and 12-week Control group(CG,n = 192).CAS(Coronavirus Anxiety Scale), PWBS(Psychological Well-being Scale),NMQ( Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire), was used to assess COVID-19-related anxiety, psychological well-being, and lower back pain at second times ( before and after the intervention). The paired t-test and an independent t-test (with a 95% confidence interval) was used to compare the outcome variables of the two groups. RESULTS: Within-group comparison, there was no significant difference in the control group before and after the intervention. In contrast, the Baduanjin group had a significant improvement before and after the intervention. Between-group comparison, the Baduanjin group had a significant difference from the control group. The intervention effect on the Baduanjin exercise group was remarkably better than that of the control group (p < 0.05). Participants in the Baduanjin group significantly improved the corvid-19-related anxiety score decreased from ( 5.22 ± 0.45 to 5.07 ± 0.27, p < 0.05). The total psychological well-being score increased from (70.11 ± 8.65 to 84.12 ± 7.38,p < 0.05) and the prevalence of low back pain decreased from (22.45 ± 1.67 to 18.35 ± 1.05, p < 0.05) among college students. CONCLUSION: During the pandemic, the Baduanjin exercise contributes to the reduction of the perceived anxiety related to COVID-19, decreases the prevalence of the lower back pain, and improves the psychological well-being of college students.
